An overview of renovation grants in the 26 Swiss cantons

In Switzerland, almost all energy-saving works are subsidised: heat pumps, insulation, solar panels, wood-fired or district heating, CECB Plus… The amounts vary considerably from one canton to another: for a 10 kW air-to-water heat pump, the cantonal grant ranges from around CHF 2,000 to over CHF 10,000. One rule never changes: the application must be made before the work begins.

In brief

  1. The Swiss Confederation funds the Buildings Programme, but it is your canton that sets the amounts and pays out the grants.
  2. Many municipalities provide their own additional funding, and energy-saving works are tax-deductible.
  3. Always apply for the grant before signing the quote and before starting the work.

The 4 sources of support

  1. The canton, through the Buildings Programme: this is the main source of support, covering heating, insulation and the CECB Plus.
  2. The Confederation, through Pronovo: a one-off payment for solar panels, applied for after the system is commissioned.
  3. The municipality or its electricity supplier: often for solar panels, batteries, advice or a top-up for heating. Search using your postcode on francsenergie.ch.
  4. Taxes: energy-saving investments are deductible from taxable income, subject to your canton’s rules.

Which projects are eligible for subsidies?

  • Replacing an oil, gas or electric heating system with a heat pump, a wood-fired heating system or a connection to district heating.
  • Insulation of the façade, roof and floors, paid per square metre insulated provided the performance meets the required standard.
  • Initial radiators or underfloor heating, when replacing an electric heating system.
  • Solar energy: thermal (hot water) subsidised by the canton; photovoltaic subsidised by the Confederation.
  • The CECB Plus (GEAK Plus), which provides the renovation plan.
  • Complete renovation to Minergie standards.
  • Depending on the canton: ventilation, charging points, batteries, support from a professional (AMO in the canton of Vaud).

  • Confederation: an increase in the one-off feed-in tariff for solar power is under consultation for 2027.
  • All cantons generally publish their 2027 subsidy rates at the end of the year: the pages will be updated.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can you apply for a grant after the work has been completed?

No, in almost all cases. Only solar photovoltaic systems (Pronovo) and certain advisory reports are considered afterwards.

Can the grants be combined?

Those from the canton and the municipality often do, with the added benefit of a tax deduction. Some municipalities deduct the canton’s contribution, and the total grant generally does not exceed 50 per cent of the cost.

I’m a tenant – can I take advantage of this?

Grants are paid to the property owner. A landlord who receives such a grant must take this into account when calculating the rent.

How long does processing take?

Often a few weeks. In Zurich, for example, the canton responds within around four weeks once the application is complete.
